In 2016, The New York Times debuted Dawn Porter’s Op-Doc film, “The Chosen Life,” the latest film in a series by independent filmmakers supported by Chicken & Egg Pictures.

The film chronicles the challenges faced by Dr. Yashica Robinson, the only practicing OB GYN in Huntsville, Alabama who provides abortions.

Op-Docs’s collaboration with Chicken & Egg Pictures provides filmmakers with an opportunity to create short form content that tackles some of the most urgent social justice issues of our time.

Chicken & Egg Pictures supports women non-fiction filmmakers whose artful and innovative storytelling catalyzes social change. Since 2005, Chicken & Egg Pictures has awarded over $4.5 million in grants and more than 5,300 hours of mentorship to over 210 films, including Trapped, Sonita, The Square, Freeheld, Saving Face, Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, and more.

Launched in 2011, Op-Docs is The New York Times’s editorial department’s Emmy award-winning forum for short, opinionated documentary films, produced with wide creative latitude and a range of artistic styles, covering current affairs, contemporary life and historical subjects.
